Reduce the file size of large PDFs.
Frequently asked questions
How do I compress a PDF online for free?
Choose your PDF, pick a compression level, then click Compress PDF. When it finishes, you’ll see the old and new file size and a link to download the smaller file. It’s free, with no sign-up.
Which compression level should I choose?
Medium is a good balance for most files. Choose Low if quality matters most, for example for documents with small print or detailed images. Choose High when you need the smallest file, such as for an email attachment or an upload limit.
How much smaller will my PDF get?
It depends on the file. Scanned documents and PDFs full of photos often shrink a lot, sometimes by more than half. PDFs that are mostly text and already small may shrink very little. The tool shows the exact before and after size when it’s done.
Will compressing reduce the quality of my PDF?
Yes, to some degree. Pages are saved as compressed images, so higher compression means smaller files but softer text and images. Try Medium first and use Low if the result looks too blurry.
Can I still select and copy text after compressing?
No. Because each page becomes an image, text in the compressed copy can’t be selected or searched. Keep your original file if you need selectable text.
Why did the tool say my PDF is already small?
If compressing wouldn’t make the file smaller, the tool doesn’t give you a bigger copy. This often happens with PDFs that are mostly text or were already compressed. In that case, keep your original file.
Can I compress a PDF to an exact size, like 200 KB or 1 MB?
Not to an exact size. Try High compression first and check the result. If it’s still too big, a PDF with many pages or large photos may need to be split into smaller files with our Split PDF tool.
Is my PDF uploaded to a server?
No. The compression happens in your browser, so your file stays on your device and is never sent to our server. This keeps private documents like statements and ID copies safe.
Is there a file size limit, and does it work on a phone?
There’s no fixed limit, but large PDFs take longer because your own device does the work, and very large files may be slow on older phones. It works in any modern browser on Android, iPhone, tablets and computers. You’ll see which page is being processed while it works.
What else can I do to make a PDF smaller?
If you only need some pages, use our Split PDF tool to keep just those. You can also merge several compressed files afterwards with our Merge PDF tool.
